WINTER PARK, Fla. - Behind 49 percent shooting the University of Charleston kept their record spotless after a 75-64 win over Missouri S&T on the first day of the 2012 Rollins Thanksgiving Tournament, Friday afternoon.
The teams were even through much of the first half with the Lady Miners (1-2) making a short offensive burst to take a 27-21 advantage, which would be their largest lead of the contest with 8:45 left to play in the first half. Charleston (2-0) responded with their up-tempo attack as
Chelsea Chambers (Columbus, OH) booked four-consecutive points in jumpstarting an 11-0 run for the Golden Eagles.
After pulling ahead Charleston took a 41-37 lead into the locker room at break and never fell behind again on the afternoon. Missouri S&T tied the game three minutes into the second half, but their effort was short-lived as
Kayla Dozier (Alpharetta, GA) and
Chelsea Brumby (Chandler, AZ) buried consecutive buckets for a five point advantage UC would run with for the next ten minutes of play.
With six minutes left in the game the University of Charleston began to distance themselves on the scoreboard behind the hot-hand of
Nichole Perry (Poseyville, IN). Perry sank a pair of shots around a power drive to the rim by
Jessi Cowden (Tomball, TX) to hand the Golden Eagles the largest lead of the afternoon at 13 points, which was more than enough to cruise with through the final minutes of play.
A Lady Miner shot with 44 clicks left to play set the final tally at 75-64. UC was out-rebounded in the contest 42-26, yet converted 33 of their 70 possessions in the game by sinking 28-of-57 shots including a season average 13 shots from behind the arc.
Charleston saw ten players put points in the box score led by
LeAnne Ross (Marietta, OH) with 13 points and three assists. Cowden and Perry followed just behind with 12 and 11 points, while Brumby rounded out the double-digit scorers with 10.
Tianni Kelly (Pickerington, OH) held possession for the Golden Eagles with a team-high eight rebounds to go with her four points in 24 minutes of action.
UC moves on to play Tusculum (Tenn.) on Saturday, Nov. 24 at 3:00 pm. The Pioneers will provide the toughest test of the season for the young Golden Eagles lineup as they earned a slot in the tournament championship game with a 69-55 victory over No. 4 ranked Rollins, Friday afternoon.
