A four-year letterwinner from 1997- 2000 for the men’s basketball team before graduating in 2003. “Mu” was selected as WVIAC All-Conference each of his four seasons and WVIAC All-Tournament in three of his four seasons at the University of Charleston. Gaines was also selected as WVIAC Player of the Year for the 1999 and 2000 seasons. Mu earned national recognition as well being selected as All-East Region in 1999 and 2000 along with being name East Region Player of the Year for the 2000 season.

Gaines was named the top player in the country in 2000 earning the NCAA Division II National Player of the Year award.
