Duernberger was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 2010. As a player on the soccer team he lettered all 4 years. He held the school record for the most scored goals in a season and while he led the team as captain the team earned a 32-12-1 record while playing. He was also named WVIAC 1st Team All-Conference.

Duernberger and his son Chad are the only father and son to be selected to the 1st Team All-Conference. He started the first soccer club teams in West Virginia (Charleston High School and DuPont High School). He also started youth leagues throughout the Eastern Kanawha Valley in the early 1990’s.  Duernberger is a retired teacher with Kanawha County Schools.
