A 1979 graduate of the University of Charleston, Samms was a four-year letterwinner for the Golden Eagle baseball program from 1976-79. Samms was a superb hitter for the Maroon & Gold, finishing his career with a batting average over .350. For his accomplishments at the plate and on the field, Samms would earn WVIAC All-Conference honors in 1977-78. He would also be named WVIAC Hitter of the Year in 1978 after posting a .423 average. The 1978 season also saw him gain national honors, earning All-American Honorable Mention.
