CHARLESTON, W.Va. - The University of Charleston women's soccer team used two second half goals to secure a first-round bye in the WVIAC Tournament as the Golden Eagles defeated Alderson-Broaddus 2-1, Wednesday afternoon.
Charleston outshot AB 6-to-1 in the first half of the contest, yet Taylor Bryant made the one Battler shot count by racing past the Golden Eagles defense from the right side to bend the ball inside the far post for a 1-0 advantage in the 23rd minute.
UC continued to dominate possession after the halftime break as the Golden Eagle's offense, which ranks fifth in the country for scoring per game, looked to find its opportunity to break past an Alderson-Broaddus defense that was playing to just preserve its 1-0 lead.
Charleston finally broke through when top shooter Kimberly D'Angelo (Lindenhurst, NY / Lindenhurst) beat her defender forcing the AB goalkeeper to come off her line to challenge a shot. Instead of taking the contested shot D'Angelo slipped the ball past the keeper to a wide open
Madeline Hartz (Cincinnati, OH / Madeira) who had followed the attack down the middle of the field for an easy goal to knot the score at 1-1.
The decisive score would not come until the 76th minute as the physical contest provided UC with a free kick deep inside the Battlers zone. Charleston would capitalize as
Elyse Surbaugh (Virginia Beach, VA / Ocean Lakes) would find leading scorer
Brittany Loveland (Cheswick, PA / Springdale) to secure the 2-1 advantage and a bye in the WVIAC Tournament.
The contest saw 14 fouls with four yellow cards, while UC took 18 shots to just five by Alderson-Broaddus.
Charleston goalkeeper
Kendra Ness (Red Lion, PA / Wilmington College) recorded three saves on the afternoon.
The Golden Eagles close out conference play with a 10:00 am contest against Shepherd (3-10, 1-5) on Saturday, October 23.
