CHARLESTON, W.Va. - The University of Charleston (15-1) jumped to a 2-1 lead after doubles and went on to a 5-2 victory against archrival West Virginia State (15-2) in the WVIAC Women's Tennis Tournament championship match.
The Golden Eagle triumph avenged a 5-4 setback to the Yellow Jackets on October 12 that gave WVSU the WVIAC regular season title. UC had won a September 8 non-league match by a similar 5-4 count.
The pairing of Mallika Mali and Christina Samoilov put Charleston on the board with an 8-0 whitewashing of Meghan Stewart and A'Lee Miller at number three doubles. Sarah Monsheimer and Laura Smith increased the lead to 2-0 as they downed Brittany Craig and Ana Juarez 8-4 at number one doubles. A rally by WVIAC Co-Player of the Year Andreea Slusarciuc and Eben Russell powered State to an 8-5 triumph against Marcela Torres and Ilaisanna Carter in number two position.
Smith took a 6-2, 6-0 over Eben Russell and Carter grabbed a 6-3, 6-1 decision against Miller to push the Golden Eagles to the edge of victory. Monsheimer's 6-1, 6-2 success against Craig ended the match to give UC the 5-2 victory. Juarez took a 6-2, 6-0 win versus Samoilov to account for State's lone point in singles.
