CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- The University of Charleston lost in double overtime, 2-1, to West Virginia Wesleyan in the Atlantic Region NCAA Tournament final Sunday in Erie, Ohio.
Trailing 1-0 with 40 seconds to play in the game, Toni Suta kept Wesleyan's hopes alive with a shot of the top of the box that deflected off a defender and into the goal. Suta's goal was set up by Matthew Brown.
Then in the second overtime, with just under one minute to play, Nicholas Amberman came up with the game-winner on a rebound shot in front of the net. Amerban's goal was unassisted and launched a massive celebration on the Wesleyan (16-5-2) sideline.
Charleston (16-4-1) had taken a 1-0 lead in the 74th minute when Ryan Osborne's shot deflected past Ryan McDougall into the left side of the net. Harry Machacha assisted on the score for the Golden Eagles.
Wesleyan advances to the D-II "Elite Eight" against Northern Kentucky at a time and site to be determined. The Norse beat Central Missouri 3-2 in the Midwest Final.
