CHARLESTON, W.Va. - A late goal with 19:19 left in regulation was all the scoring needed for Alderson-Broaddus to upset No. 2 seed Charleston in the WVIAC women's soccer semi-finals, Friday night at Schoenbaum Stadium.
The University of Charleston (11-6-1, 8-1) brought the 10th best offensive attack in Division II into the game and did not disappoint as the Golden Eagles were on the attack controlling the ball most of the game. UC outshot the Battlers (12-4-4, 6-2-1) 7-2 in the first half and 11-4 in the second, yet AB goalkeeper Kate Laird held strong to keep the ball out of the net in recording eight saves in the contest.
Alderson-Broaddus made the best look of the evening count as Chelsea Gilliam took a free-kick from just outside the 18-yard box. Gilliam blasted a shot off the right side of the Charleston defensive wall with enough power to deflect off a Golden Eagle defender and continue toward the goal. UC goalkeeper Kendra Ness got tied up with a gang of players in front of the net as the ball took one bounce off the wet turf and skipped past everyone, Ness included, to net the only score of the damp evening.
The win advances the Battlers to the WVIAC Championship game to be played on Sunday. Charleston finishes the season 11-6-1 and ranked 10th in the Atlantic Region, which marks a great turnaround for a team that just a year ago was 5-13-1.
