CHARLESTON, W.Va. - WV Wesleyan traveled to Schoenbaum Stadium in Charleston, WV to battle the University of Charleston Golden Eagles Saturday evening.
A hard fought game by both sides on a beautiful evening for soccer. The Bobcats Laura Dalton notched the first goal of the match up the left side as Meghan Zayas slipped the ball though the Golden Eagle defense at the 25:24 mark of the match. The Golden Eagles possessed the ball well despite being outshot 10-5 in the first half.
With a 1-0 deficit going into the second half, the Golden Eagles continued to force their will on Wesleyan and pushed forward in an effort to draw level with the Bobcats. Wesleyan’s Laura Dalton found the back of the net for her second goal of the evening. Senior midfielder Hannah McCormick found the feet of Dalton inside the six yard box and Dalton beat UC keeper Catherine Perry near post to give Wesleyan a 2-0 lead at the 62:18 mark. Wesleyan outshot UC 8-5 in the second half as both teams recorded nine shots on goal each for the match.
At the 72:32 mark, UC’s Fallon Nicholas served a driven ball across the penalty area to Courtney Cole. Cole a junior transfer from WV Wesleyan, was fouled in the box and freshman Kimberly D’Angelo converted the penalty shot at the 72:32 mark of the game.
The score would remain 2-1 as the Bobcats improved to 2-0 in conference and the Golden Eagles picked up their first lose in conference, 2-1.
“A great atmosphere with fan support from both sides. It was a well played game and I am pleased with the effort of the team. Both teams have played a very competitive schedule regionally to date. They made the most of their opportunities and their goalkeeper made a few tremendous saves. I look forward to meeting them again in the post-season”, states Coach Diuguid.
UC travels to Buena Vista, Va. to play Southern Virginia at 4pm on Tuesday and is scheduled to play in Greensburg, PA against Seton Hill on Saturday at noon.
