Football Drops Close Contest to Concord

Zach Grossi passed for 302 yards and two touchdowns, and Tae Gilbert ran for 160 yards and a pair of scores to lead Concord to a 37-28 West Virginia Conference win against the University of Charleston Saturday at Callaghan Stadium in Athens.

Thomas Mayo caught nine passes for 186 yards and two more touchdowns for the Mountain Lions (3-1, 1-1).

UC (2-2, 1-1), which trailed by as many as 17 points twice in the game, made it interesting in the fourth quarter.

Justin Nelson's 9-yard touchdown pass from Maurice Leak cut UC's deficit to 31-21 in the third quarter and Lamonte Lattimore's 10-yard scoring run made it 31-28 with 8:20 left in the game.

However, the Golden Eagles' rally was foiled when Grossi hit Mayo on an 86-yard touchdown pass with 5:23 remaining to put the Mountain Lions up 37-28.

The Golden Eagles led 7-0 at the end of the first quarter on a 2-yard scoring run by Julian Johnson, but the second period belonged to the Mountain Lions.

After a Brandon Strupp 30-yard field goal put Concord on the scoreboard, the Mountain Lions converted two UC turnovers into touchdowns for a 17-3 lead at the half.

The Mountain Lions used two Gilbert touchdown runs, including an 80-yard burst, for a 31-14 lead after three quarters.

Aaron Dunlap led UC on defense with 11 total tackles, an interception and a fumble recovery. Craig Kampfer had three of UC's seven tackles for losses.
