SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – Shippensburg University had 20 players see action in season opening action as the Red Raiders defeated the University of Charleston women’s soccer team 3-1, Friday evening in Shippensburg, Pa.
SU got on the board first with the lone goal of the opening half as senior Lisa Findley found the net at the 25 minute mark to take the early 1-0 advantage. The Red Raiders outshot UC 9-2 in the first half as junior Catherine Perry managed five saves.
The Golden Eagles knotted the game at 1-1 as freshman Brittany Loveland placed the ball past the Red Raider keeper on a penalty shot (58:38) to score the team’s first goal of the young season.
Shippensburg’s offense did not hesitate as it responded less than five minutes later with the game winning goal at 63:04. The Red Raiders would notch another score with 13 minutes remaining as the SU defense was challenged by more UC shots, yet gave little ground to the Golden Eagles en route to the 3-1 victory.
Charleston was outshot in the contest 17-9 and had a deficit of 8-to-1 in corner-kicks. Perry did tally seven saves on the evening in a complete game performance.
UC returns to action on Sunday, Sept. 5 as they travel to face California (Pa.) at 12:00 pm.
