SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. - Lindsey Kentner scored 23 points as the University of Charleston downed Shepherd 81-76 Saturday in a West Virginia Conference women's basketball matchup in Shepherdstown.
"It's a great road win for us,'' said UC coach Sherry Winn. "Shepherd's a good team. It was a very physical game, and we were fortunate that we played smart enough to win.
"This team has got talent. I just keep saying they're going to bust it loose and not turnaround and look back. This game really helps us feel that way.''
Kentner added four assists and four steals, Ali Tobias chipped in 16 points and Tarenna Dixon contributed 11 points and nine boards for the Golden Eagles (10-5 overall, 8-3 WVC). Tiana Beatty, a former Capital High standout, had 10 points and contributed seven rebounds for UC, which shot 53.3 percent from the field to run out to a 43-32 lead at halftime.
Jerica Hewett turned in 17 points and seven rebounds for the Rams (10-4, 8-2) while Shelby Fayak added 16 points and 10 boards and Katie Boggs had 13 points. Shepherd shot just 34.7 percent for the game.
Winn said UC has learned a lot from this week's loss at Glenville.
"[We learned] how our leaders need to be positive and they've stepped up the last couple of games,'' she said. "They've really turned the corner since Glenville, how they approach the team and the game. I'm pleased with the direction we're headed right now.''
