Women's Tennis Takes WVIAC Regular Season Championship

Laura Smith

BLUEFIELD, W.Va. - The University of Charleston women's tennis team sealed the West Virginia Conference regular season championship with a double-header sweep of Bluefield State and Concord this weekend.

The Golden Eagles (10-1, 9-0) were nearly perfect in a dominant performance 9-0 against Bluefield State as UC didn't not lose a point in single competition. The only points the Big Blues managed to book came in the No. 1 doubles match, which saw Marcela Torres (Bogota, Columbia) and Laura Smith (Townsville, Australia) run away with an 8-2 victory.

After completing the first match Charleston traveled up the WV Turnpike to face conference foe Concord where the team nearly repeated its performance from the morning tilt with a 9-0 win. Mallika Mali (Brisbane, Australia) and Davina Holtfretter (Luetjensee, Germany) got the afternoon contest started with an 8-0 showing in the No. 3 doubles setting the tone for the match.

The Mountain Lions put up more of a fight in singles play, yet were unable to overcome the strong Golden Eagle lineup. Courtney Pierron (Wheelersburg, OH) was the only Charleston player to breeze through singles play unscathed with her 6-0, 6-0 win at the No. 6 singles position.

The two wins secured the West Virginia Conference regular season title and the top seed in the conference tournament where an NCAA birth is on the line. The WVIAC Tournament will begin play in Charleston, WV on Oct. 20 with final seedings and match times to be announced at the WVIAC website.
