Women's Tennis Vaults Into WVIAC Championship Game



CHARLESTON, W.Va. - The University of Charleston women's tennis team will look to defend its WVIAC tournament title on Saturday as the Golden Eagles swept two early round contests to secure their spot in the championship round.

UC will face No. 3 seed West Liberty in the championship contest at 1:00 pm on Saturday, Oct. 22. The Hilltoppers upset No. 2 WV State 5-3 on Friday afternoon to secure their spot in the contest.

Charleston 5, Davis & Elkins 0

CHARLESTON, W. Va.
– The University of Charleston advanced to the semifinals with an 8-2 victory over Davis & Elkins Friday morning.

Marcela Torres and Laura Smith recorded an 8-2 win at No. 1 doubles. Sarah Monsheimer and Kelsey Hensley posted an 8-0 victory at No. 2. Malliki Mali and Courtney Pierron posted an 8-1 win at the No. 3 doubles slot, giving the Golden Eagles a 3-0 lead.

Smith garnered a 6-0, 6-0 win at the No. 3 singles slot before Davina Holtfretter won 6-1, 6-0 at No. 5, claiming the overall win for UC.

CHARLESTON, W. Va.
– Top-seeded Charleston advanced to the WVIAC finals with a 5-0 victory over Shepherd Friday afternoon.

Laura Smith and Marcela Torres downed their opponents 8-5 as the top doubles team. Sarah Monsheimer and Kelsey Hensley accounted for an 8-3 win at No. 2. Davina Holtfretter and Mallika Mali swept the Rams at No. 3, 8-0.

In singles action, Hensley posted a 6-0, 6-0 win at No. 4 while Mali won by an identical score as the No. 5 seed, securing the overall win for the Golden Eagles.

UC will face WLU at 1 p.m. in the WVIAC Championship Saturday.
