CHARLESTON, W.Va. - After breaking into the win column for the first time two weeks ago, the University of Charleston suffered a serious setback last Saturday against visiting UNC-Pembroke.
The Golden Eagles racked up record offensive numbers Oct. 8 in a 49-35 win at Seton Hill, but failed to take flight against a Pembroke defense that entered the game allowing more than 30 points per game. UC mustered only 306 yards of total offense and converted on just 2-of-11 third downs in the 52-14 loss.
Today, Charleston (1-3 overall, 1-6 West Virginia Conference) looks to get back on track against West Liberty (1-4, 1-6) and the Hilltoppers' lackluster defense. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m. at UC Stadium.
West Liberty has allowed at least 27 points to opponents in six of its seven games and at least 40 points four times. That includes last week's 50-24 loss at the hands of Shepherd.
As he has done for much of the season, former Kennedy Award winner Jordan Roberts provided a bright spot for the Golden Eagles offense against UNC-Pembroke, rushing for 139 yards, including an 88-yard scoring romp. Roberts is averaging 110 yards per game and has scored a team-high six touchdowns.
West Liberty is led by quarterback L.D. Crow, who has completed 127-of-245 passes for 1,305 yards with five TDs against 14 interceptions. His favorite target has been Brandon Schroeder, who has pulled in 34 passes for 420 yards and three scores.
Last year, WL dealt UC a 37-23 loss in West Liberty.
