CHARLESTON, W.Va. - Despite an outstanding 10 save performance by goalkeeper Catherine Perry the University of Charleston women's soccer team dropped its fourth-straight game in a two-overtime thriller against WVIAC opponent Concord, Tuesday afternoon.
Charleston (3-5-1, 2-2-1) controlled the contest early putting pressure on the Mountain Lion defense from the opening touch. The Golden Eagles hammered 10 shots with six on goal in the opening half, but were unable to find the net headed into break.
The second half saw the intensity of the contest quickly accelerate with the teams combining for 13 fouls and Concord found success in the physical play to outshoot UC 5-4, yet all five shots were on goal keeping Perry on her toes.
After concluding regulation without a score the teams moved to the first overtime period where the University of Charleston had two scoring opportunities they would be unable to take advantage of sending the game to the second extra period.
Just two minutes into the second overtime period Nicole Dirnagl sent a high-flying shot towards the net that seemed to be a desperation shot to get the ball out of traffic in the middle of the field. The Dirnagl shot from 35-yards out looked to be sailing high of the goal, but dropped quickly in its approach to just slip under the cross-bar in the extreme upper right corner over a leaping Perry to secure the 1-0 win for the visitors.
UC looks to shake off its recent play when the team returns to the field to face WVIAC opponent Pitt-Johnstown on Sunday, Oct. 9 at 10:00 am.
