CHARLESTON, W.Va. - The University of Charleston women's tennis team kept its perfect mark in WVIAC play and vaulted to the top of the conference standings with a 6-3 win over Kanawha Valley nemisis WV State, Wednesday afternoon.
Charleston grabbed the early edge coming out of double play with a 2-1 advantage as
Marcela Torres (Bogota, Columbia) and
Laura Smith (Townsville, Australia) teamed up to take an 8-5 victory in No. 1 play. The Golden Eagles captured its second point of the day when
Mallika Mali (Brisbane, Australia)and
Davina Holtfretter (Luetjensee, Germany)combined to hold off the Yellow Jackets at the No. 3 doubles position 8-6.
WVSU boasts one of the top singles players in the region in Brittany Craig, which assisted in WV State regaining an edge as she slipped past Torres in No. 1 singles action (7-6, 7-6). The Yellow Jackets captured the No. 2 singles point, as well, before Charleston came charging back to take control of the match.
Smith led the way for UC at the No. 3 singles position taking Andreea Slusarciuc in an exciting game that required an extra point to be decided 3-6, 6-4, 1-0 knotting the contest at 3-3.
The rest of the match would fall to Charleston's advantage as freshman
Kelsey Hensley (Ashland, KY), Mali and
Marieve Edwards (Toronto, Canada) took wins in the No. 4-6 singles to secure the 7-3 victory.
