CHARLESTON, W.Va. - No. 39 ranked Slippery Rock used the momentum of taking two hard-fought doubles wins to record a 5-4 win over regional rival University of Charleston in women's tennis action, Sunday morning.
SRU took the No. 1 and No. 2 doubles by tight margins of 9-8 (7-1) and 8-6 in order to control the match with an early 2-0 advantage. The regionally ranked Golden Eagles showed they were not going to be an easy opponent by repsonding with an 8-6 win in No. 3 doubles by Mallika Mali (Brisbane, Australia) and Ilaisanna Carter (Beckley, WV) to cut the score to 2-1.
Charleston showed their depth and why they hold the No. 2 ranking in the Atlantic Region by sweeping the early singles matches at No. 4, No. 5 and No. 6. The Rock responded with decisive wins at the No. 1 and No. 3 positions to setup a gut-wrenching battle for the match in the No. 2 match.
Slippery Rock would seal the victory with a No. 2 win by Dunja Drmac as Sarah Monsheimer (Silver Spring, MD) would provide a tough match, yet eventually falling 6-3, 7-6 (8-6).
Charleston continues its tough stretch in the final weeks of the regular season as they take the court on Sunday, April 10 against PSAC and regionall ranked Indiana (Pa.) at 10:00 am on the road.
