It Takes Overtime But Women's Soccer Secures Win

CHARLESTON, W.Va. - Freshman Holly Bigg could not have found a better time to notch her first career goal as she found the net in overtime to hand the UC women's soccer team a hard fought 2-1 win against conference foe Wheeling Jesuit, Saturday afternoon.

Wheeling Jesuit got off the bus pressing the offensive attack against a strong University of Charleston defensive back line, yet made their chances count as they broke into the box just once in the opening half yet managed two shots; one of which found the net for an early 1-0 lead. The teams were even in the opening half with four shots each, yet Charleston keeper Catherine Perry was forced to make three saves as all the WJU shots were threats to the goal.

The second half was played just the opposite of the first as the Golden Eagle offense showed they were more than capable of taking over a game by outshooting the Cardinals 10-to-1, while forcing WJU goalkeeper Jennifer Fletcher to make four saves.

Fletcher held her own against the UC attack, but the Wheeling Jesuit keeper was unable to hold the lead as Elyse Surbaugh struck for a game tying goal with just 17 minutes left in regular off a penalty kick after a foul was called on a breakaway within the 18-yard box. The goal was Surbaugh's first of the season.

After fighting out an aggressive 90 minutes the teams went to overtime. Just 40 seconds remained in the opening overtime session when Bigg found herself on a breakaway down the middle of the field all alone behind the WJU defense. She took advantage of the only shot she had as she lifted the ball over a charging Fletcher and into the back of the net to secure first conference win this season. Surbaugh got credit for the assist as she placed a perfect pass over the Cardinal defense that allowed Bigg to run into the open field unchallenged.

Charleston will look to continue its march thru WVIAC competition on Wednesday, Sept. 14 when they travel to face Davis & Elkins at 4:00 pm.
