CHARLESTON, W.Va. - Dominant singles play led the way for the University of Charleston to open their 2011-12 campaign with two conference wins as they defeated Fairmont State and Seton Hill, Saturday afternoon.
In the opening match of the day, Fairmont State was able slip out a win in the No. 1 singles in an extra frame, yet it would not be enough as
Laura Smith,
Sarah Monsheimer,
Mallika Mali,
Kelsey Hensley and
Marieve Edwards all collected their first singles wins of the year.
Charleston (2-0) secured the 7-2 victory as Torres and Smith combined to win the No. 1 doubles match-up easily 8-1, while Holtfretter and
Courtney Pierron cruised to an 8-2 win.
Seton Hill was the second opponent of the day and had the unfortunate task of facing a now warm Golden Eagle squad, which proved to be a difficult task as UC ran away with a 9-0 victory.
The University of Charleston now awaits conference foe Davis & Elkins on Sunday, Sept. 11 for a 12:00 pm match at the Schoenbaum Courts in Charleston.
