CHARLESTON, W.Va. - Zack Grossi found a rythm to the tune of 364 yards passing to pick apart the University of Charleston defense as Concord dropped the Golden Eagle football team to 0-3 on the season with a 38-15 win, Saturday afternoon.
The game's scoring started slow as each team went three and out with their opening possessions, but Concord (1-2) broke the silence as John Stritchfield delivered a 21-yard field goal with 3:43 remaining in the opening quarter. The Golden Eagles did not stay behind long on their home turf as quarterback Maurice Leak placed a perfect ball over the Mountain Lion defense to freshman John Drennen for a 36-yard touchdown and Drennen's first career TD for a 7-3 advantage.
Unfortunately for Charleston (0-3) the connection with Drennen would be the only scoring play until 12:20 remaining in the contest as CU went full throttle with short passes and a fast paced offense to score 35-straight points to pull away to 38-7 after three quarters.
UC hit the scoreboard for the final time as Jordan Roberts delivered a six-yard touchdown run where he drug a host of Mountain Lion defenders into the endzone to break the scoring drought for Charleston. On the point after sophomore backup quarterback Boobie Tobler made his way into the box score by taking off around the left end of the defense for the two-point conversion setting the final score at 38-15.
Concord outgained the Golden Eagles 482 yards to 300 as the visitors dominated ball possession to keep the young Charleston defense on the field for 35:14. Roberts led the way for UC on offenese with 91 yards rushing and 56 yard receiving, while on the other side of the ball star tailback Brian Kennedy was held to just 55 yards on the ground.
Pat Kirkland's squad will have to forget the loss quickly as they prepare this week for a matchup with WVIAC power and No. 6 ranked Shepherd. The Golden Eagles will travel to Shepherdstown, WV to face the Rams on Saturday, September 24 with kickoff set for 12:00 pm.
