CHARLESTON, W.Va. - In what proved to be an even matchup Slippery Rock managed to find the net to earn a 1-0 regional victory against the University of Charleston women's soccer squad, Tuesday afternoon at Schoenbaum Stadium.
The two teams played to a nearly even game statistically speaking, with each team registering nine total shots and five shots on goal. Slippery Rock edged Charleston 6-2 in corner kicks for the afternoon.
Shelby Ward hit what ended up being the game-winner as she put the ball past Golden Eagle keeper Catherine Perry off a crossing pass from Izabell Scott at the 82:44 mark. The lone goal would be enough to seal the contest as UC fought hard, but could not break The Rock's defensive alignment in the final six minutes of play.
For SRU Dana O'Neill earned the shutout, stopping all five shots on goal. Perry took the tough loss despite a solid effort in goal, allowing just the single goal and recording four saves.
