SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. - The University of Charleston women's soccer team advanced to the WVIAC Tournament semifinals with a 2-1 upset win over Shepherd, Sunday afternoon.
Charleston (8-8-3) got the contest started off with an early goal by
Elyse Surbaugh (Virginia Beach, VA). UC found the net just seven minutes into the contest as Brittany Loveland beat the Shepherd defensive front and found Surbaugh cutting to the net where a perfect cross was placed into the goal for a 1-0 lead.
The narrow lead held up through halftime before the Golden Eagles added another goal to start the second stanza. UC's second score came in the form of an own goal as an SU defender blocked a cross into her own net.
Shepherd played a man down after Danielle Roos was dismissed from the game in the 43rd minute, yet pulled together for a second half goal to get within reach of making a comeback to hold off the upset. Kelsey Eagan scored for the home team in the 62nd minute, but it wouldn't be enough as the Golden Eagles quickly silenced the Shepherd offense to pull off the 2-1 victory.
For the game UC held a 17-12 advantage in shots, yet
Courtney Budd (Egg Harbor, NJ) was required only to make one save on the afternoon.
With the win Charleston moves on to the WVIAC Tournament semifinal game (7:00 pm) on Friday, Nov. 2 at Alderson-Broaddus.
