Make it Four-Straight Championships for Men's Soccer

CHARLESTON, W. Va. – It took a huge stand in goal by senior Sean Teepen (Cincinnati, OH ) through a shootout, yet the University of Charleston men's soccer team notched it's fourth-consecutive West Virginia Conference championship Sunday afternoon at Schoenbaum Stadium.

Neither team was able to find the net through 110 minutes of play, which forced the title to be decided by way of a shootout. Davis & Elkins made a stop on the first Charleston attempt of the shootout, while sinking their own effort to put the home team in a bind needing a stop.

The teams would trade back-to-back shots before Teepen came up big the first time with a sensational effort as he smothered the ball along the left post to keep his squad within one. To follow his game-saving block he then stepped to the line himself only to bury the ball in the net with a lighting strike to the top left corner knotting the shootout at 3-3.

Both teams netted 4-of-5 attempts sending the game into sudden death shots bringing both teams to the edge of hoisting a trophy, whomever made the first stop and followed with a score took the match. It didn't take much waiting as Teepen made another great read on the first Senator shooter to setup the game-winner by Renan Ramos (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil) who delivered a blast past a diving Moises Oseguera for the victory.

For the contest, UC held a slight 12-8 advantage in shots, yet controlled the attack with a 5-2 edge in corner kicks as the game was played in D&E territory for much of the afternoon.

With the win Charleston holds the WVIAC Tournament trophy for the fourth-straight time and now moves on the NCAA Tournament play. Seeding for the NCAA Tournament will be announced on Monday, Nov. 5 at 7:00 pm with the show being streamed live here at ucgoldeneagles.com.
