CHARLESTON, W.Va. - No. 5 seeded University of Charleston stunned top-seed Alderson-Broaddus 1-0 in the WVIAC Women's Soccer Tournament, Saturday evening.
Charleston (9-8-3) came off the opening touch with an explosive offensive strategy that caught the Battlers (13-5-1) off guard. On the scoreboard the Golden Eagles were the visitors, but they controlled the momentum and pace of the game like they were expected to be the team to dominate the contest.
UC outshot Alderson-Broaddus 9-1 in the opening stanza forcing three saves to keep the scoreboard blank headed into the break.
The scoring silence didn't hold off for long though because the looks only became better for the University of Charleston in the second half. Continual pressure finally broke down the A-B defensive plan as
Renee Boudreau (Livonia, MI) kept racing through the box taking every inch the Battlers were willing to hand over.
Boudreau drew the defense out further every time she gained more yardage on her runs, which set up the scoring play perfectly from the first touch of the second half. Boudreau cut through the defense along the right side before crossing the ball over two A-B defenders to a wide open
Kelsey LaCroix (Flushing, MI) who made easy work the shot for the only goal of the night.
Alderson-Broaddus' strength is in scoring early and packing their defense back to take victories, which put them at a disadvantage to play from behind.
Courtney Budd (Egg Harbor, NJ) kept the A-B side of the scoreboard blank with five saves in the game, while her teammates executed precision passes around the field to eat the clock in securing the victory.
With the victory UC heads into the West Virginia Conference championship game against No. 2 seed WV Wesleyan on Sunday, Nov. 4 at 6:00 pm. Charleston won the regular season tilt against the Bobcats earlier this season 2-1.
