CHARLESTON, W.Va. - Despite controlling possession and creating solid looks at the goal the University of Charleston women's soccer team came up just short in a 1-0 loss to WV Wesleyan in the West Virginia Conference championship game, Sunday evening.
No. 2 seeded WVWC got on the scoreboard early as a misplay deep in the UC zone allowed Jocelyn Prescott to get free in front of the net for a tap in that accounted for the only point of the contest.
After scoring the go-ahead goal the Bobcats were content with playing defense as Charleston continued to charge into the WV Wesleyan zone time and time again. The best look for UC down the stretch came with just minutes remaining and
Kelsey LaCroix (Flushing, MI) breaking through the left side to beat the Bobcat defense. LaCroix fired what was sure to be the equalizer, but it wasn't meant to be as the ball hit the inside of the far post and bounded back into play allowing WV Wesleyan to preserve the victory.
Defensively,
Courtney Budd (Egg Harbor, NJ) booked four saves for the evening.
On the night, Charleston outshot WV Wesleyan 10-8, while taking a 4-1 advantage in corner kicks. The defeats wraps up the Golden Eagles' season with a 9-9-3 overall record.
