Women's Tennis Advances in NCAA Tournament

Full Match Results

INDIANA, Pa. - A three-hour rain delay wasn't enough to cool down the No.6 seeded University of Charleston women's tennis team as they advanced to the regional championship with a 5-3 upset of No. 3 seed Slippery Rock, Saturday evening.

Slippery Rock got in the scorebook first with a victory at No. 1 doubles, but the Golden Eagles charged ahead with back-to-back wins in the No. 2 and No. 3 doubles slots.

Sarah Monsheimer (Silver Spring, MD) and Marieve Edwards (Toronto, Canada) took the narrow No. 2 doubles win 9-8 (9-7), while Mallika Mali (Brisbane, Australia) and Kelsey Hensley (Ashland, KY) also went into an extra set for Charleston's second point of the evening 9-8 (7-3).

After a rain storm forced the event to change locations to indoor courts nearly an hour away SRU pulled ahead 3-2 with wins at No. 1 and No. 3 singles before Laura Smith (Townsville, Australia) grabbed a victory at the No. 2 slot 7-6 (7-1), 6-0.

The games went down to the wire but the Golden Eagles held tough to pull out three set wins for the final two points needed to advance to the regional championship against host Indiana (Pa.). Hensley recorded the fourth point with a 6-3, 2-6, 6-1 win in No. 4 singles play, while Edwards battled from behind for a 3-6, 6-0, 6-3 No. 6 win.

Charleston now moves on to an 11:00 am contest against No. 2 seed Indiana (Pa.) on Sunday, April 29. The winner of the UC/IUP matchup will advance to the NCAA Tournament fina site at the Division II Spring Festival in Louisville, Ky.
