CHARLESTON, W.Va. - Two CIAA teams got the best of the University of Charleston women's tennis team on senior day on Thursday afternoon.
UC fell 5-2 to Shaw in the day's opening contest.
Marcela Torres (Bogota, Columbia) and
Laura Smith (Townsville, Australia)teamed up in the No. 1 doubles position to take an 8-2 victory, while
Mallika Mali (Brisbane, Australia) and
Kelsey Hensley (Ashland, KY) were victories in the No. 3 doubles slot with a 8-3 decision over the Bears.
The Golden Eagles were unable to carry their 2-1 advantage beyond doubles play as Shaw wrapped up the contest with four-straight singles wins.
In the final contest of the evening the University of Charleston again headed out of doubles play with a 2-1 match lead headed into singles play against Winston-Salem State.
Smith registered the first singles win of the afternoon in the No. 2 position with a 6-4, 6-1 decision. Senior
Sarah Monsheimer (Silver Spring, MD) in her final home match as a Golden Eagle went out on top with a dominant 6-1, 6-1 performance in No. 3 singles play.
Despite a strong start to singles play Winston-Salem would go on to win the remaining four singles matches to seal a hard-fought 5-4 win.
