CHARLESTON, W.Va. - Newcomer
Courtney Budd (Egg Harbor, NJ) was a wall in net for the University of Charleston women's soccer team, but it wouldn't be enough to take the season opener as Shippensburg finally won the numbers game to net the game winner with just over a minute remaining in the first overtime period.
The Red Raiders (1-0) got on the scoreboard first in the 42nd minute, but was answered in the second half by a uncontested ball off the foot of
Brittany Loveland (Cheswick, PA) who had escaped the defense for a breakaway on a long ball from
Holly Bigg (Limehouse, Canada).
The lone goals by each team were all the action seen in regulation as Budd played a huge role by stopping 12 shots on goal as the home standing Raiders outshot Charleston 19-9 in regulation.
Overtime proved to be more of the same as Shippensburg controled possession to outshoot UC 4-1 including the game winner in the 98th minute. Budd closed the evening with 14 saves as SU outshot the Golden Eagles 23-10.
UC continues its tough Pennsylvania tour with a stop at nationally ranked California (Pa.) on Saturday, Sept. 1 at 1:00 pm.
