Men's Soccer Takes Down No. 4 Millersville

Box Score

MILLERSVILLE, Pa. - Nathan Schmitt used his first career goal to vault the University of Charleston men's soccer team to a 2-1 upset of No. 4 ranked and 2011 Final Four participant Millersville, Sunday afternoon.

No. 25 UC (1-0-1) jumped on the board first against the 2011 Atlantic Regional Champion when Brett Elliott netted a header into the lower right corner off a free kick from Rob Vincent.

Millersville (1-1) proved they were a top-contender for the regional title again this year as their offense continued to threaten by controlling possession, yet it was the Golden Eagles' defensive effort that held the edge. The Mauraders finally got on the board when they benefited from a well placed rebound that was knocked past Charleston keeper Sean Teepen in the 66th minute.

Despite the consistent pressure Teepen kept his squad ahead of the Millersville offense with seven second half saves to finish with nine for the contest.

Schmitt nailed the game winner in the 68th minute when Vincent found him from outside the box for a breakaway on goal that was blasted past the MU keeper.

The match was truly a battle of the top-two Atlantic Region heavyweights as the teams combined for 33 shots.

UC opens their home schedule on Sept. 5 at 7:30 pm against West Virginia Conference opponent Alderson-Broaddus.
