CHARLESTON, W.Va. - The University of Charleston used a dominating performance Wednesday afternoon at Trace Fork Fields to come away with a 2-0 win over the visiting Blue Knights from Urbana University.
UC will have scored seven goals in its past two contests, an outburst of goals considering they had just scored three in their previous five matches. It couldn't come at a a better time as they head down the homestretch of the 2013 season and look for a MEC Tournament berth.
Charleston would get the scoring started just 10 minutes into the match when Kim D'Angelo would slip a diagonal pass into the path of Brittany Loveland who easily beat the Urbana keeper the far left corner. Loveland's goal would be her fifth of the season and third in the past two games.
UC would continue to fire shots and create chances throughout the remainder of the half, but would only walk away with the narrow 1-0 margin going into halftime.
Out the break the Golden Eagles didn't waste much time doubling their lead as Holly Bigg would get on the end of a Loveland cross and head the ball past the Blue Knight keeper to give UC the 2-0 lead. Urbana wouldn't threaten the Charleston defense much all afternoon, totalling only four shots for the match which Jennifer Poppe all turned away.
The Golden Eagles would earn the 2-0 win and improve their record to 6-6-1 overall and 4-5-1 in MEC play. UC sits in fourth place in the Mountain East but have four remaining conference matches that could move them up or down the conference standings. The first of those matchups comes Sunday when they travel to West Liberty to face the Hilltoppers.
