Women's Tennis Prepares for MEC Championship Weekend

Kelsey Hensley Prepares for a Forehand
CHARLESTON, W.Va. - Charleston will be the tournament's third seed. The Golden Eagles (6-3, 5-2 MEC) dropped an 8-1 decision to WVSU and had a 7-2 loss to West Liberty. UC's Mallika Mali was a winner for Charleston against both West Virginia State and West Liberty, and also had a role in a doubles win against the 'Toppers.

West Virginia State, the 2013 Mountain East Conference champions, will try to add the MEC Tournament Championship to its successful fall season this weekend at Schoenbaum Courts in Charleston, W.Va.

The Yellow Jackets (9-0, 7-0 MEC) swept through the regular season and wrapped up the conference championship on Saturday with a win over UVa-Wise. WVSU won a key dual against Charleston last week and defeated runner-up West Liberty earlier this season.

West Liberty finished the year 9-1 and 6-1 in MEC play with its lone loss coming to West Virginia State. The two teams met on Sept. 29 with the Yellow Jackets winning 9-0. However, two matches went into tiebreakers and WVSU was on the winning side of 9-7 decision at No. 2 doubles.

West Virginia Wesleyan (6-3, 4-3 MEC), which features freshman Paula Pimenta who went unbeaten in the league in singles, will be seeded fourth. The Bobcats edged out UVa-Wise, 5-4, in an entertaining match a week ago. The two teams will meet again in the quarterfinals as the Cavs (6-6, 3-4 MEC) as finished as the fifth seed in the MEC Tournament.

Shepherd (5-8, 2-5 MEC) will be seeded sixth, followed by Concord (1-6, 1-6 MEC) and Fairmont State (1-11, 0-7 MEC).
