Women's Soccer Runs Unbeaten Streak to Six Games in Win over Concord

Box Score CHARLESTON, W.Va. - Charleston Women's Soccer continued its winning ways Tuesday afternoon defeating Concord University 2-0 in the last regular season match of 2013.

In a match that didn't mean much in terms of final standings for the Golden Eagles UC came out like it was a lose or go home match and fought hard for the full 90 minutes to come away with a decisive 2-0 win to squash Concord's postseason hopes.  Concord came in trailing the fourth place squad Wheeling Jesuit by one point and needed at least a draw to keep their MEC postseason dreams alive.

UC came out in their normal formation and tactic of controlling possession and did that for a majority of the first 30 minutes, but Concord would find success by utilizing their speed from forward Cole.  Concord would have the best scoring chances of the first 45 minutes but UC keeper Jenn Poppe would turn away every Mountain Lion attempt to keep a scoreless half for each team.

Coach Diuguid would change his formation for the second half, pushing center back Holly Bigg to center forward and play a flat three in the back.  The Golden Eagles used the extra attacker to continually put pressure on the Mountain Lion back four and finally broke through with the first goal coming from senior Brittany Loveland on a one-on-one with the Concord keeper which she beat to the top right corner for a 1-0 UC lead.  A tired Concord defense would be the victim again just a few minutes later when Loveland again would find herself in a scoring opportunity which was turned away initially but Isabella Jaffin would be there to follow up on an empty Concord net to give Charleston the 2-0 advantage and the win.

With the win Charleston finished the 2013 regular season 9-6-2 overall and 7-5-2 in the Mountain East Conference.  UC earned the third seed in the upcoming MEC Championship and will face WV Wesleyan on November 7th in Fairmont.
