Golden Eagles Hit the Road to Face #12 Shepherd

Trei Kelley & Richard Steele
Charleston, W.Va. – The Golden Eagles carry a two-game win streak into Shepherdstown this Saturday as they take on the #12 ranked Shepherd University Rams.

Charleston began the 2013 season with consecutive losses but has rebounded the last two weeks with solid wins over MEC opponents, including a last second victory over Notre Dame College on a 35-yard field goal by MEC Player of the Week Puma Nuredini.

In a matchup between the Mountain East Conference preseason favorites, Charleston will face a Ram defense that is arguably one of the best in the country in Division II, allowing just 9.5 points per game.  Last season in Charleston the Golden Eagles held a 10-point advantage to only see Shepherd rally for a 16-10 win.

As mentioned before Shepherd has a stout defense, leading the country in rushing defense giving up just 28 yards per game on the ground but Charleston has gotten the ground game going as of late providing a 100-yard rusher in each of the last two games in Leighton Settle and John Knox.

Replacing last season's WVIAC Offensive Player of the Year Jordan Roberts was going to be a tall task for the Golden Eagles this year as they headed into the MEC, but Charleston has made strides recently in their ground attack and currently sit in third in the MEC in rushing yards per game with 169 ypg.

Both teams have been opportunistic on defense with the Rams sitting at +6 in turnover margin, while UC is +2 and have turned three interceptions for touchdowns.  Shepherd has won the last three matchups with the Golden Eagles coming away with victory in 2009.

Game time is set for 1pm on Saturday, Oct. 5 from Shepherdstown.
