Box Score CLARION, Pa. - LeAnne Ross poured in 19 of her game-high 22 points in the second half to propel Charleston to a 19-point victory over Clarion University Friday evening in UC's opening round game of the Clarion Classic.
Despite committing 17 turnovers in the first 20 minutes of action, Charleston held the lead for a majority of the first half with their largest lead at 20-10. Golden Eagle turnovers did allow Clarion to claw their way back into the game and actually took the lead over UC 24-23 with 4:20 remaining on the clock. That would be the last time Clarion led as UC closed out the half on a 10-3 run to go into the break leading 33-27.Â
Charleston shot well in the first half, connecting on 52% of their shots and doubled Clarion's rebound total at 25-12. Chyress Lockhart led the Golden Eagles in scoring with eight points on 3-for-5 shooting while Nichole Perry chipped in 7 points and five rebounds.
UC came out blistering the nets in the second half, especially from behind the three-point line. UC's six-point lead at the break quickly ballooned to a 15-point lead in the first seven minutes of play behind five combined three-pointers from LeAnne Ross and Perry. The Charleston lead never hit single digits again as the hot shooting continued from Ross who pushed the Golden Eagles out to a 19-point lead, 61-42, after connecting on her fifth three of the second half.Â
UC kept the margin around 20 points as Clarion couldn't shoot their way back into the game, hitting on only 36% of their field goal attempts including 4-for-23 from behind the arc. At the end of regulation Charleston ran away from the host Golden Eagles with a 19-point victory, 74-55, to improve to 3-0 on the young 2013-14 season.
Ross led all scorers with 22 points and hit on six of her seven three-point attempts and 8-for-11 overall. Perry added 16 points and seven boards while Lockhart turned in a good all-around game scoring 12 points, dishing out seven assists and pulling down seven rebounds in her 30 minutes of play.
UC hits the hardwood again tomorrow to face Millersville with tipoff set for 4:00 PM.
