Huge First Half Gets UC Women Fourth Straight

Box Score

CLARION, Pa. - Charleston carried a 28 point lead into halftime on their way to an 86-71 win over the Millersville University Marauders Saturday evening in their second game of the Clarion Classic. The win is UC's fourth straight to open up the 2013-14 season.

The Golden Eagles played about as well as any team could play in the first half in all phases of the game. Millersville, on the other hand, had a dreadful first 20 minutes and found themselves on the bad end of a 46-18 game going into halftime. UC opened the game with 11 straight points before the Marauders knew what hit them. It didn't get any better after that either for the first half, as Charleston continued to pump in shot after shot cruising to the 28 point cushion, a deficit that proved to be unsurmountable for Millersville.

UC was led by transfer guard Chyress Lockhart's aggressive, take it to the hole style of play as she scored 16 points in her 17 minutes of action. As a team, Charleston shot 56% for the half and knocked down five of their eight three-point attempts. The Marauders got six points and six rebounds from Celeste Robinson, but collectively shot 20% from the floor, including hitting on one of their 12 shots from beyond the arc.

Charleston would extend their big halftime lead out to 39 points four minutes into the second half before giving way to a Millersville comeback attempt. The Marauders turned around their shooting woes from the first half to connect on 21 of 31 shots and seven three-pointers over the next 20 minutes. The Golden Eagles still maintained a comfortable lead throughout the game, never dropping below 20 points until 2:30 remaining in the contest. UC didn't struggle from the field in the second half but definitely cooled off shooting 45%. Although the field goal percentage dropped they continued to find opportunities from the charity stripe, getting 18 of their 40 second half points from the foul line.

At the end of the 40 minutes it was all University of Charleston, as they cruised to a 15-point win over Millersville. Lockhart led all scorers with 25 points, 12 of those at the free throw line. LeAnne Ross continued her spectacular shooting from three-point land, hitting 4-of-6 for 12 points. Kayla Dozier had an impressive game off fo the bench for UC, chipping in 13 points and seven rebounds.

Millersville got 20-point games from Carly Gallagher and Shelby Reimer to lead the Marauder scoring attack.

UC opens up their home schedule next Saturday as they host MEC opponent West Liberty University. Tipoff is set for 2:00 PM at the Eddie King Gymnasium.
