Deja Vu for UC Women, Upset UP-J in 1st Round of WVIAC Tourney

Box Score Johnstown, PA -  Charleston once again would travel to Pennsylvania to take on the higher seeded Lady Cats, and just like last year would come away with a first round upset paving their way to Civic Center. 

It was ninth-seeded University of Charleston (WV) that build a 12-point second half lead on its way to eliminating eighth-seeded Pitt-Johnstown, 72-64, in Monday's First Round of the 2013 WVIAC Tournament in the Sports Center. Pitt-Johnstown finished the season 14-12.
    
Nicole Carman's 3-pointer four minutes into the game put the Lady Cats in front 11-3.Charleston battled back to cut it to 13-12 on a
Kali Cuttaia (Eden, NC) jumper at 12:07, but Pitt-Johnstown quickly pushed it back out to seven at 19-12 on lay-ups by Kaitlynn Fratz and Carman.
    
The Golden Eagles wouldn't go away and outscored Pitt-Johnstown 23-13 over the final 8:32 of the first half to take a three-point halftime advantage.
LeAnne Ross (Marietta, OH) hit a 3-pointer that gave Charleston its first lead since the first possession of the game, before a Tianni Kelly (Pickerington, OH) bucket with 1:35 remaining in the half extended it to 35-30. The Lady Cats answered with another basket by Fratz with 31 seconds left to cut it to 35-32 at the break.
    
Sleighter's 3-pointer to open the second half knotted it at 35, but the Golden Eagles pushed it out to 43-37 on Kelly's basket.The Lady Cats cut it to one on Jasmine Harper's basket, but once again, Charleston regained control. This time with a 10-0 run, capped by
Jessi Cowden's (Tomball, TX) 3-pointer, that put the Golden Eagles up 53-42 midway throught the half.
    
Charleston extended it to 12 with just under eight minutes to play.Back-to-back 3-pointer by Sleighter, and a basket in the paint by Rachel Johnson cut it to four at the 4:16 mark. Fratz then made it a two-point game, but Pitt-Johnstown wasn't able to get over the hump. Four straight points by Charleston increased it to 66-60, and the Golden Eagles hit six-of-8 free-throws in the final 57 seconds to seal it.

The Golden Eagles were outrebounded by 41-33 on the glass, but forced 22 Lady Caty turnovers, shot 44% (29-66) from the field, 6-26 from behind the 3-point line, and hit 8-11 from the free-throw line.Cuttaia scored 15 points and pulled down 10 rebounds in her first career double-double, and Cowden chipped-in 14 points to pace Charleston, which improved to 15-12.

The Golden Eagles advance to Wednesday's WVIAC Quarterfinals to take on top-seed Glenville State (WV) College at 6:30pm in the Charleston Civic Center.
