Box Score Charleston, WV – Golden Eagles pull off big upset of #1 seeded Glenville State, 65-57.
It was a slow start by both teams taking five minutes before the first basket was scored by either team however, the next 15 were a different story as both teams found their shooting touch from the field.
Once again, the game was played a feverish pace between these two teams sometimes looking like a track meet with players sprinting up the floor. Neither team was able to distance themselves from the other with the biggest lead of five coming from UC in the first half. Glenville would close the gap and even the score up going into the half, 28-28.
Charleston would get eight points each from
LeAnne Ross (Marietta, OH) and
Chrissy Keir (Savreville, NJ) at the break.
The Golden Eagles, mainly
Nichole Perry (Poseyville, IN), would start the second half strong creating an eight point lead on 11 straight points from Perry’s long range shooting, connecting on three straight 3-pointers. The Pioneers would fight back as expected and trim the lead to one, 46-45, with just over five minutes to play. Again, UC would have the answer behind eight consecutive points on another three by Perry, a three by
Jessi Cowden (Tomball, TX) and a layup by Keir pushing the Charleston lead out to nine with just a little over three minutes to play.
Glenville would try frantically to get back in the game, but UC would convert on nine of their last 10 free throw attempts to pull off the upset victory of #1 WVIAC ranked Pioneers, 65-57.
Charleston was led in scoring by Perry’s 18, followed by a great all-around game by Keir who scored 14 and handed out eight assists, only turning the ball over once.
UC will play in the semifinals Friday at the Civic Center against Seton Hill with tip-off set for 3:00pm.
