Arrows Take Season Opener from Women's Soccer

Box Score Charleston, W.Va. - The 2013 season for the Charleston women's soccer team got off to a slow start Thursday, falling to the visiting Arrows from Ursuline College 2-1.

The Golden Eagles (0-1) and Arrows (1-0) played to a scoreless first half as each team produced a handful of chances but neither team could find the back of the net.  UC goal keeper Jennifer Poppe (Barrie, Canada) would turn away four Ursuline attempts at goal in the first forty-five minutes to take a 0-0 score into halftime.

The pace would pick up in the second half as each team would get more scoring opportunities and the Arrows would strike first in the 64th minute after a Charleston defensive miscue that allowed Paige Rowan to get a 1-on-1 with Poppe and place a shot in the right corner to make the score 1-0.

The Golden Eagles would answer less than two minutes later when Danielle Siegrist (Wexford, PA) would slide a pass through the Arrow defense to Brittany Loveland (Cheswick, PA) who blasted a shot past the Ursuline keeper to even the score at 1-1 in the 66th minute.

Just a minute later Charleston would get another golden opportunity after a foul on Isabella Jaffin (Nescopeck, PA)  in the box that would result in a penalty kick, but UC couldn't take advantage as the Arrow keeper would push Loveland's shot wide of the post.

In the 84th minute the Golden Eagles would return the favor and commit a penalty in their own box that gave Ursuline a PK of their own which Rowan would convert to give the Arrows a one goal cushion with just over six minutes remaining.  UC couldn't create another scoring chance and would drop the match 2-1.

The Golden Eagles return to action Sunday to face Lake Erie College at 2pm at the Fields at Trace Fork.
