Golden Eagles Stifle Cavaliers, 68-52

Box Score Charleston, W.Va. –  Charleston turned up the defense on University of Virginia College at Wise Cavaliers on Saturday en route to a 68-52 win at the Eddie King Gymnasium.
 
UC held the Cavaliers to just 31 percent shooting on the afternoon to earn the 16-point win.  Monet Saunders scored a career-high 11 points on her way to her first career double-double, adding 11 rebounds.  LeAnne Ross moved into sole possession of 7th place in the record books for made three-pointers with her three made triples in the game.  Nichole Perry also achieved a milestone, knocking down her 100th three-pointer of her UC career.
 
Kayla Carey led the Cavaliers in scoring, putting in a game-high 19 points on the afternoon.
 
UC built their largest lead of the first half when Kayla Dozier went the length of the court for a driving layup to put the Golden Eagles up 16, 33-17, with 40 seconds left on the Eddie King clock.  The Golden Eagles carried a 14-point lead to the locker room over the Cavaliers, led by LeAnn Ross who scored 10.  UC played smothering defense, holding the Cavaliers to 25% shooting for the half and forced seven first half turnovers.
 
The Cavaliers trimmed the lead to single digits, 43-34, at the 12 minute mark of second half to try and work their way back into the game. Charleston responded with a 7-0 run to push the advantage out to 16 and never looked back, building over 20-point leads multiple times over the final 10 minutes.  UC closed out the Cavaliers taking away a decisive 68-52 win.
 
The win moves Charleston to 10-4 overall and 6-4 in Mountain East play.  UC returns to action on Thursday to face WV State University at 5:30 PM.
