Golden Eagles too Much for Yellow Jackets in Rivalry Game

Box Score Charleston, W.Va. – University of Charleston started fast Thursday night and never looked back in defeating the West Virginia State University Yellow Jackets 80-68 at the Eddie King Gymnasium.
 
The Golden Eagles were led by Chyress Lockhart's 24 points, four rebounds and three assists.  LeAnne Ross put up a solid shooting performance knocking down all five of her field goal attempts on her way to 16 points.  For the game Charleston shot 45% from field and hit on 24 of their 33 free throw attempts.
 
Lexy Carson from WV State led all scorers with 30 points, including hitting four of six from behind the arc.  Jordan Brock chipped in 20 points and seven rebounds in the losing effort.
 
UC led wire to wire, jumping out the Yellow Jackets early in the first half, scoring the first seven points to take a 7-0 lead.  That early start propelled Charleston to an 11-point lead, 42-31, heading into the locker room at the break.  The Golden Eagles dominated the glass in the first 20 minutes, outrebounding the Jackets 26 to 11. 
 
WV State grinded their way back into the game in the second half, pulling within six points on a Lexy Carson layup with about seven minutes to play.  Charleston ensued with a 6-0 run over the next two minutes to give the Golden Eagles a 12 point advantage, 68-56, with just five minutes to play.  UC would convert on their free throws down the stretch to close out the visiting Yellow Jackets, 60-68.
 
The win moves Charleston to 11-4 overall on the 2013-14 season and 7-4 in the Mountain East.
