Box Score Fairmont, W.Va. - The University of Charleston couldn't overcome a poor shooting night and mistakes in a 80-68 loss to Fairmont State University at Joe Retton Arena Saturday afternoon.
Junior guard Chyress Lockhart led Charleston with 15 points while Kiara Johnson added 10 points and seven rebounds for the Golden Eagles. Lockhart and Johnson were the only two UC players in double-figures on the afternoon.
WVU transfer Makenzie White led the way for the host Falcons, scoring 19 points but also committed 10 turnovers in the win. Joining White in double figures were Hailey Garrett (15), Deidra Combs (15), and Hallie Gunno (12). Combs also grabbed nine rebounds to go along with her 15 points.
Fairmont State outscored UC 34-22 in the paint and took advantage of the 19 Golden Eagle turnovers, leading to 24 Falcon points. After trailing by seven at the break, UC got within four points one minute into the half only to see the host Falcons quickly build an 11-point advange two minutes later.
Charleston could never get the lead back under double digits as the Falcons outscored the Golden Eagles 39-28 over the final 20 minutes to pick up the easy 80-62 win.
The loss moved Charleston back to fifth place in the MEC at 7-5, while Fairmont moved past the Golden Eagles into fourth at 7-4.
