Charleston Dominates Glass in 65-61 Win Over Concord

Box Score Athens, W.Va. - The University of Charleston Golden Eagles used strong bench play and hard work on the glass to earn a 65-61 road victory over Concord University Mountain Lions at the Carter Center Thursday evening.

Charleston was once again led in points by junior point guard Chyress Lockhart who poured in 14 points on the evening, but got balanced scoring from her teammates as four Golden Eagles chipped in nine points each including a nine point, nine rebound game from KJ Johnson. UC beat up the Mountain Lions on the glass, outrebounding Concord by 16, 40-24. Another key to the Charleston win was bench production, as the Golden Eagles outscored the Mountain Lion bench 22-0.

Andrea Bertrand turned in a stellar performance in the loss, scoring a game-high 25 points for Concord.

The Mountain Lions grabbed the lead early over Charleston, holding their biggest lead of the contest at 18-12 nearly midway through the first half but UC outscored Concord 21 to 10 over the last 11 minutes of the half to take a five-point lead into the locker room, 33-28. Concord opened the second half on a 10 to three run to take a two-point lead at 38-36 with 13:33 remaining on the Carter Center clock. Facing back-to-back conference losses Coach Adam Collins' group responded with a long run of their own over the seven minutes to grab their largest lead of the contest, 55-44, with just over six minutes left in the game.

Concord wouldn't go away quietly and trimmed the UC lead to just one possession, 62-59, with about 20 seconds to go and had a chance to tie the ball game. Charleston's defense was ready for the Mountain Lion play and forced a turnover to all but seal the Golden Eagle victory. At the end of regulation UC came away with the 65-61 MEC win.

The win improves the Golden Eagle record to 8-3 and 4-3 in MEC play. Charleston gets back in action Saturday afternoon as they travel to Urbana, Ohio to take on the Blue Knights
