WHEELING, W.Va. - The Golden Eagles traveled to Wheeling for a MEC conference match against the Cardinals and left Wheeling with a win, taking care of the Cardinals 2-1.
In two contrasting styles of play, UC controlled much of the possession over 90 minutes and held a slight advantage 17/15 in shots. Both goalkeepers played well and made a few big saves for their teams. UC's freshman,
Zoe Zyta finished with eight saves as Wheeling's net-minder, Holly Kraus finished with 10 saves.
The first goal of the match was a world class finish by senior,
Holly Bigg. After beating a Cardinal player in the middle of the field, Holly pushed the ball onto her right foot and scored from 30 yards out at the 46:38 mark of the second half.Â
In the 53
rd minute  junior,
Lauren Haven received a ball played through and took a touch to the endline before serving the ball back to top of the six for the incoming freshman,
Ivey Nucilli to score the Golden Eagles second goal of the match.
Wheeling did strike in the 77
th minute as Nikki Hilliard converted a loose ball in the six to bring the score to 2-1. UC's keeper came off of her line to make the initial save on the corner of the 18. The ball popped over the head of Zyta and the UC defense failed to clear the ball. Hilliard ran through and tucked it away.Â
The Cardinals pressured the ball with tenacity and created a few late opportunities to make the game level. UC weathered the storm and picked up their ninth MEC victory for the season.
UC returns to action on Saturday at 2pm for their senior game against WV Wesleyan.
