CHARLESTON, W.Va. – The University of Charleston opened up their home schedule with a 72-56 win over Wheeling Jesuit University Monday evening at Eddie King Gymnasium.
Charleston had five players finish in double figures led by Nichole Perry's game-high 17 points on 50% shooting from the floor. Monet Saunders continues to pound the glass for the Golden Eagles finishing with seven rebounds to go along with 10 points.
The Cardinals were paced by Jaila Bryant's 16 points and seven rebounds in the losing effort. Tonight's loss was the first Wheeling Jesuit as their record drops to 2-1 overall, and 0-1 in Mountain East Conference play.
UC held a slim six point lead, 33-27, at the break only to see the Cardinals tie the game at 40-40 five minutes into the second half. The Golden Eagles responded with an 18-8 run capped off by a Padyn Ludewig three pointer to give Charleston its first double-digit lead of the game, 58-48. UC played steady over the final six minutes, building their biggest lead of the game as the horn sounded with Charleston on top 72-56.
The win improved Charleston's record to 3-1 overall and evened their MEC record 1-1 on the season.
