UC Controls Tempo but Comes Up Short in Upset of #10 Pioneers

Box Score GLENVILLE, W.Va. – The University of Charleston Golden Eagles held the #10 Glenville State Pioneers to a season low 53 points but came up short in their upset bid, falling 53-50 at the Jesse R. Lilly Gym Saturday afternoon.

Charleston was led by Nichole Perry who finished with a game-high 14 points on five of 11 shooting, but only had three points after the break.  Tianni Kelly added eight points and five rebounds for the Golden Eagles in the losing effort.

UC finished the contest shooting 47% including 44% from behind the arc, hitting on eight of their 18 attempts with Perry accounting for four of the made three's.  Charleston pounded the glass against the Pioneers, outrebounding Glenville 37-23 over the 40 minutes.  However, in usual fashion Glenville won the turnover battle, forcing 18 Golden Eagle turnovers while committing only six.

Charleston carried a six-point lead, 32-26, into the break after holding the Pioneers scoreless over the final seven minutes of the half leading to a 12-0 run for the Golden Eagles heading into the locker room.  The halftime lead would be Charleston's biggest lead of the afternoon.

Glenville State opened up the second half on a 10-0 run to quickly erase the UC lead and establish a four-point cushion of their own.  Charleston continued to control the tempo but found points hard to come by in the second half, scoring just 18 in the final 20 minutes.

Trailing by 6, 53-47,  with just a little over one minute to go, UC forced a Pioneer turnover that led to a Chyress Lockhart three to cut the lead in half and 32 seconds showing on the game clock.  Charleston was forced to foul and sent Ashleigh Fossett to the line for a one-and-one opportunity which she couldn't convert on.

Charleston took possession with 22 seconds to play needing a three to tie to send the game into an extra frame.  Glenville closed out on the Charleston shooters but Perry got off a contested three that drew the front of the iron but a LeAnne Ross offensive rebound created another Kayla Dozier game-tying attempt.  Dozier's last second shot from the top of the key drew iron again but wouldn't fall for the Golden Eagles.  The Pioneers dribbled out the last second for the 53-50 win.

The loss puts Charleston at 14-7 overall and 10-7 in the MEC.  #10 Glenville improves to 15-1 in the Mountain East and 20-2 on the 2013-14 season.

Charleston gets back in action Thursday in their return home to face Concord University with tip set for 5:30 PM.
