CHARLESTON, W.Va. - The Charleston Women's Tennis team suffered a hard fought 8-1 loss to #44 ranked Indiana University of Pennsylvania at the Charleston Tennis Club Sunday morning.
The Crimson Hawks were ranked #2 in the most recent Atlantic Region rankings and were hoping for an easy win over the Golden Eagles. The 8-1 score may lead you to believe that they cruised by the UC Women, but that was not the case Sunday. All three doubles matches were very competitive but Charleston came up short in each of them, losing 8-6 at No. 1, 8-5 at No. 2 and 8-6 at No. 3. A few points in each of those matches go Charleston's way and they easily could have held a 2-1 advantage heading to singles.
The six singles matches were played just as close as the doubles matches with three of them going to third sets or third set tiebreakers. Again Charleston pushed the Crimson Hawks to the edge but could only come away with one match win. Kelsey Hensley won from her No. 2 position 6-4, 3-6, 1-0 for UC's only court winner.
UC is hopeful their performance pushes them over the hump in the regional rankings where they currently sit in ninth position. The top eight teams in the region advance to NCAA postseason play.
