Pioneers Too Much for UC in MEC Championship Game

Box Score CHARLESTON, W.Va. – Glenville State University took advantage of 18 Charleston turnovers to win the inaugural Mountain East Conference Basketball Championship, defeating the Golden Eagles 74-50 at the Charleston Civic Center Sunday afternoon.

The Pioneers got double figure scoring from four players, led by Kenyona Simmons' 16 on 70% shooting.  Simmons had her way in the paint against Charleston, converting nearly all of her opportunities on whoever UC tried to throw at her.  For her performance today and throughout the tournament she was named MVP of the four day championship.

Junior shooting guard LeAnne Ross led all scorers with 17 points on 6-for-13 shooting, including three of six behind the arc.  Chyress Lockhart turned in another solid performance in the loss, chipping in 13 points from her point guard position.  Both Ross and Lockhart were named to the MEC All-Tournament Team for their today and throughout the weekend.

Charleston fell behind early on in the contest to the Pioneers 10-2, but a couple of LeAnne Ross three's and a short jumper got the Golden Eagles back into the game.  UC used a slowed down approach to the game to limit the Pioneers scoring chances and was effective throughout the first 20 minutes.  Despite holding Glenville to just 28 first half points, Charleston still trailed by eight going into the break.

The Pioneer lead hovered around 10 points for the first 10 minutes of the second half before going on a 9-0 run to push the once 10-point lead out to 19 with 7:41 to go.  UC couldn't find their shooting range, thus couldn't fight their way back into the contest and ultimately lost by 24 to the eventual MEC Tournament Champion, Glenville State College Pioneers.
