27 Point 2nd Quarter Vaults UC Football to 3-0 Start

Elam Has Rushed Over 100 Yard for 3 Consecutive Games
Box Score CHARLESTON, W.Va. – A balanced offensive attack led University of Charleston to a 30-14 win over the University of Virginia College at Wise at UC Stadium Saturday afternoon as the Golden Eagles improved their unbeaten record to 3-0 for the 2014 season.

Charleston took the opening drive to the Cavalier 1-yard line looking to tack on a touchdown but a Jordan Paul (Brooklyn, NY) fumble ended the drive leaving UC without a score.  After 15 minutes the score remained unchanged, tied 0-0.

The Golden Eagles took possession at the start of the 2nd quarter and marched it 42 yards on 7 plays for their first score of the day.  Marvin Elam (Lawrenceville, GA) finished the drive with a 16 yard scamper through the middle of the Cavalier defense that gave UC the 6-0 lead.  Charleston's defense forced a three-and-out after kicking off to force a Wise punt.  Torie Wagner (Severn, MD) fielded the Cavalier punt at his own 31-yard line then weaved his way 69 yards to the endzone putting the Golden Eagles up 13-0.

Charleston capitalized on a Logan Cox (Mineral Wells, WV) interception on their next possession, this time a 38-yard touchdown reception down the sideline by Joey Augustin (Christiansburg, VA) from Jordan Paul that put UC up 20-0 halfway through the quarter.  The Golden Eagle defense forced another three-and-out, giving UC possession at the Wise 44-yard line.  Charleston scored on their fourth straight possession, a short 1-yard plunge by Elam, his second touchdown on the day.

UC took a comfortable 27-0 lead into halftime over the Cavaliers.

Wise used a 13-play 85-yard drive to finally get on the board in the third quarter that closed the Charleston lead to 27-7.  UC tacked a Bret Benes (West Palm Beach, Fl) field goal on later in the quarter to extend the Golden Eagle lead to 30-7 before the quarter ended.  Charleston's offense couldn't continue their momentum from the first half but managed to do enough to keep Wise's offense off the field for a comeback attempt.  The Cavaliers did punch in their second score of the day late in the fourth to make it a respectable 30-14 final.

Charleston's ground game was once again led by Elam who finished the day with 23 carries for 124 yards and two touchdowns.  Paul completed eight of his 12 pass attempts to finish with 184 yards and one touchdown.  Augustin had a huge day from the receiver position, catching seven passes for 136 yards.

UC improves to 3-0 on the season and 2-0 in MEC play while Wise goes to 0-3.  Charleston hits the road next week to face take on Notre Dame College in South Euclid, Ohio.
