SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. – Eagles soar to victory against the Rams securing the MEC regular season championship again.
Â
Charleston knew if they won the game they would be crowned MEC regular season champions. They looked hungry from the onset and scored inside 2 minutes. It was great team play that created a shot at the edge of the box for
Conor Branson, which struck the post and rebounded to
Jermaine Windster who calmly finished to give UC an early 1-0 lead.
Â
Seven minutes later UC doubled their lead, thanks to a wonder strike from
Dion Stergiotis. The ball was laid back from
Will Roberts to Stergiotis on the right hand side 25 yards from goal. Stergiotis cut inside onto his left foot and fired the ball into the top left corner of the goal, leaving the Ram's goalkeeper with no chance.
Â
The third goal came after 22 minutes, when Branson's 30 yard pass found Roberts' run, who viciously crossed into the box. The cross was defended and cleared high to the edge of the 18-yard box, but only as far as the oncoming
Leighton Richards. Richards met the ball on the full volley, displaying expert technique, to notch his second volley in as many games.
Â
UC continued to dominate after half time and stretch their lead to 4 goals after 54 minutes. A fantastic run down the left hand side by Windster resulted in him drilling the ball low dangerously across the 6-yard box leaving Roberts with a simple tap in.
Â
On the 73
rd minute mark,
Bruno Oliveira created a shooting opportunity for Windster, whose shot was blocked by the hand of Shepherd defender giving the ref no choice but to give the penalty. Roberts converted the spot kick to bag his 9
th goal in four games. Tallying an impressive 16 for the season, in all competitions.
Â
There was still time for
Augusto Maciel to get in on the act, as he turned and drove the ball home from 25 yards in the 89
th minute, feeding off Branson's pass.
Â
UC outshot their opponents by a staggering 36 shot margin, firing 38 shots at the Rams goal, with the Shepherd goalkeeper making some impressive saves. He was recorded for 17 on the day. Shepherd managed 2 shots at Charleston's goal.Â
Â
UC is back in home action on Saturday against Wheeling Jesuit, looking to avenge their only defeat of the season, in the last regular game of the season. The kick off is at 4pm.
